Do it Rockapella!
Tasunke here, I went to a Rockapella concert tonight. It was awesome.
They did a variety of great songs, but I’ll speak in a bit of detail about the ones I remember and enjoyed best.
There was a segment where they sang all their commercial jingles, including several different versions of an Almond Joy/Mounds jingle. Here’s some Youtube links to another performance earlier this year of the medley:
- Part 1 (Taco Bell, Budweiser)
- Part 2 (Almond Joy/Mounds)
- Part 3 (Today Show)
- Part 4 (Preparation H and ringworm)
- Part 5 (Dr. Pepper and Folgers)
Of course, they performed the song that, to most people of my generation that grew up watching PBS, defines Rockapella, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” but not before they asked the audience to yell, “Do it Rockapella!” which we were happy to oblige. There was a ‘drum solo’ break in the middle of the song, where the vocal percussionist went off on a very nice and involved drum solo.
They also did three separate encores, each with thunderous applause and standing ovations. One of which I remember was “It’s a small world, ” which I thought was very well done, and not nearly as annoying as many find the original to be. The last one was quite impressive, because that one was done without microphones.
I did learn some interesting trivia, from what was said between songs and talking briefly with the members of Rockapella after the concert (during autograph signing). Apparently the bass, George Baldi III, worked at Tokyo Disneyland before joining Rockapella, and Scott Leonard is fluent in Japanese. (Incidentally, Scott is the only current member of the group that was a member during “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”)
Overall, it was a blast, and I look forward to going to their concert when they come to Idaho Falls again. (According to those I spoke at the Idaho Falls Arts Council, they’ve been here before, multiple times. I apparently I just didn’t know about it.)
